This collaboration is focused on supporting communications, telemetry, tracking, and control for satellites, launch vehicles, hypersonic flight vehicles, and other space and aerial systems critical to Canada’s strategic and commercial aerospace future. As part of the initial collaboration, NordSpace and C-CORE will conduct joint site engineering, regulatory planning, and business case studies for new ground stations across Canada. Initially planned locations include NordSpace’s Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Inuvik, Northwest Territories. These ground stations will expand Canada’s capabilities for global satellite communications access and support launch operations from Canadian soil.

ONTARIO, CANADA, May 20, 2025 -- At 3:45 PM EDT on Friday May 16th, 2025, NordSpace successfully tested both its new Darkhorse engine test cell and its third generation 3D printed Hadfield liquid rocket engine for the first time, marking a significant step towards Canada’s first commercial space launch. The Darkhorse test cell and all NordSpace engines and vehicles are designed and manufactured in-house at the company’s Markham facility, leveraging advanced manufacturing techniques. The test ran for 7 seconds at NordSpace’s propulsion test range, a company-owned secure site in Northeastern Ontario, successfully delivering nominal thrust, active cooling, and impulse results. Long duration tests are scheduled for the coming days, along with refinements to fuel mixture ratios and higher-pressure scenarios to test the limits of the new test cell and engines.

The Hadfield series of engines are the only commercial orbital-class liquid rocket engines being actively developed in Canada, designed to propel NordSpace's launch vehicle, Tundra, to carry up to 500 kg to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
